Academy Auditions have begun! |
Starting last year, the PMF Academy audition process has been completely reconfigured in order to provide more opportunities to a broader range of talented young musicians from all over the world. The guidelines, required excerpts and more were announced on the official website on Thursday, November 5, marking the beginning of PMF 2016 audition season. Auditions will be accepted through Thursday, January 14, and results are scheduled to be announced in late February.

|
All auditions are based on videos of the excerpts being performed, which are then uploaded to “Acceptd,”an online audition site. Surely young musicians across the globe looking toward PMF 2016, the festival's 27th summer, are diligently polishing their skills in order to give their best performances.

What was your impression of PMF when you passed the audition and attended the event as an Academy member, and what do you remember the most about your time at PMF?
I attended the Festival in 1999 and 2001; it was the starting point of my orchestral career. I had the opportunity to work with many many world-class musicians, and to gain experience for playing in the orchestra. It was also at PMF that I had made many lifetime good friends. |
|
A quarter-century after the founding of PMF in 1990, there are over 3,200 alumni worldwide. What impact does PMF have on your current musical life?
I see that PMF's mission continues to be engaging the world's most sought-after conductors and orchestral musicians to collaborate with Academy members, and to perform exciting and ambitious concert programs. |
|
PMF will continue to foster young musicians and offer the inspirational power of music to a broad, global audience, inheriting founder Leonard Bernstein's vision, contributing to the classical music culture of the world, and thereby to world peace. What kind of festival would you like to see it become?
I hope this wonderful mission will continue to help encourage the young players' passion for music; in turn, it will bring beautiful music to the general public. In the world of music, we all speak the same language. |
Kuan Cheng Lu
At the age of 23, Kuan Cheng Lu was selected by Lorin Maazel to join the New York Philharmonic. He is the first Taiwanese classical musician to earn a seat in the Philharmonic in its 175-year history. Lu has received numerous awards and scholarships that include the top prize in the Taiwan National Violin Competition, first prize in the ASTA string competition. He received his bachelor's in music degree from Oberlin College, his master's in music from the Manhattan School of Music, and his doctor of musical arts from the Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY). He is an alumnus of the Music Academy of the West, now a partner in the New York Philharmonic Global Academy, and has studied with former New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow, Lisa Kim, Acting Principal, Second Violin Group, and Yoko Takebe. Other teachers have included Roland and Almita Vamos, Daniel Phillips, Julia Bushkova, and his father, Chung Chih Lu.
Lu has served as concertmaster of various orchestras, including the Manhattan Symphony, and Manhattan Philharmonia. As a member of the New York Philharmonic Ensembles, he makes regular appearances at Merkin Concert Hall. Lu teaches at the Manhattan School of Music in the graduate program for orchestra performance.
He was a member of the PMF Academy in 1999 and 2001.

Other interests
I enjoy learning new solo and chamber music repertoire for concerts, as well as teaching the younger generation. I love photography art; in a way, working with photos is just like painting.
